Adult Protective Services
Our agency is required to investigate and evaluate all reports of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults age 60 and older in Athens County.
These adults may be handicapped due to aging, or they may have physical or mental impairments that prevent them from providing for their own care and protection.
When funding and services are available, adults who experience abuse, neglect and/or exploitation are offered support for protection and self-sufficiency .
Referrals are accepted from anyone.
Mandatory reporters, included in the law, include: senior service providers, ambulatory and home health agency providers, community mental health programs and alcohol & drug treatment facilities. Also, attorneys, physicians, podiatrists, dentists, psychologists, coroners, ministers, nurses, social workers, peace officers, and employees of nursing homes, adult day cares, alternative homes, and hospitals are required to report abuse if they have reasonable cause to believe an adult is being abused, neglected or exploited.
All referrals are confidential.
For individuals who are ultimately deemed incompetent and incapable of making their own decisions, the county court system appoints a guardian to help them. APS many times enlists the help of community members who volunteer to serve in this role through the agency's Senior Citizen Guardian Program.
